One of the ideals that Nick lives by is from
one of his dad’s sayings “’…all the people in this world haven’t had the
advantages that you’ve had.’”(Fitzgerald 1) which had me thinking about how
Nick approaches his future and perhaps how he lived in his past. I felt that
there is a lot about Nick that the reader assumes since he is this mellow
character that has no direct back story and is put in this luxurious situation
where the story takes place. Although I feel like there is a lot that the
reader can miss when analyzing the main character. First off he is a war
survivor which is usually considered lucky not really an advantage. Perhaps he
is quick witted but he probably also has problems day to day, possibly
influenced by PTSD. Also it is said that he has been “accused of being a
politician” because his insights on secrets of many people. Even though this
seems like he may be able to persuade people I feel like since he treats Gatsby
like a different individual, I think that Nick has dealt with many different
kinds of people and has become
successful because of his ability to cooperate with many diverse personalities
that help him as a “bond man”(10). Although I know that Gatsby will most likely
be the main focus in the story I still feel like Nick has not shown his full
back ground and I hope that more is revealed later on.
In “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald the narrator,
known as Nick ,writes about his experiences during the Roaring 20’s.
